Ecological Urban Area
TEDA has been approved ISO 14001 environmental management system certification and national ISO 14000 demonstrative area. TEDA is also the trail area of Environment Management of Chinese Industrial Parks presided both by United Nations Environment Program and the General Bureau of Environment Protection of China. TEDA is becoming gradually a green industrial park and an ecological garden city.

In 2009, TEDA added green space of 3.13 million square meters. Up to now, the green lands area reaches 16.547 million sqm, among which is about 1,559,500 sqm of public green lands. With 20.9% of the built-up areas covered with green patches.Landscaping ratio up to 28.2%,green lands occupying ratio 21.5%, 98.08sqm green lands of per capita.  Open gardens, forest park and tropical garden have been constructed in TEDA.

In Jan 2003 when Mr. Xie Zhenhua, Director of China Environmental Protection Administration, visited TEDA on his investigation trip, he pointed out that TEDA should make improvement by building an ecological industrial park, increasing sustainable development capability and further develop in a new-type industrial way.

TEDA has pursued to build an exemplary national ecological industrial park. So far, TEDA has completed the following work on developing ecological industry:

Made planning on ecological industrial park and passed the evaluation hosted by China Environmental Protection Administration.

• Apply the regional ISO14001 environment management system and run the sustainable solid and liquid waste management system.
  
• Implement the ecological development and restructuring on infrastructure in a gradual way.
  
• Strengthen the investment promotion work on key projects based on the theory of ecological industry and achieved remarkable results.
  
• Reinforce the regional environmental security protection and made it a key task to establish a monitoring system on major dangerous sources in 2004.

However, we still face some challenges in building an ecological industrial park:

• The theory and practice of ecological industry are still in the process of development. We still need to explore how to build the model due to the different application situations.
  
• Although TEDA has been equipped with industry foundation and policies, we still need to resolve the issues in a broad range of areas including energy, raw materials, design, manufacturing, service and culture when we deal with products upgrading and waste treatment.
  
• TEDA is originally a salt mine neighboring the most important chemical industry manufacturing base in China. As a result, when compared with other economic development zones, TEDA is at a disadvantageous position in shortage of natural and ecological environmental resources.

In order to build an ecological industrial park, TEDA will provide important information to all kinds of economic organizations in TEDA, particularly those small- and medium-sized commercial/manufacturing organizations. These information will help them make economical and environment-friendly decisions and further encourage the cooperation on products and waste discharge between companies.
Meanwhile, we need to encourage the cooperation and research between manufacturing, education, research and industries; enhance the exchange and cooperation in different fields, like participating in the pilot activities organized by UN Environment Authority, EU Environment Authority, China State Environment Administration and Tianjin Environment Authority with an aim to promote TEDA.
In building the ecological industrial park in TEDA, we should extend the research and application areas to Tianjin Free Trade Zone, Tianjin Tang Gu district, Tianjin metropolis and the Bohai Economic Rim area, take the advantages in human, natural and information resources to construct a virtual ecological industrial chain and industrial park and make an economic and environmental win.
Generally, the ecological industrial park will organzize the following activities:

• Support the application of recycling method in companies' operation and production.
  
• Encourage the TEDA companies to participate in the projects run by the ecological industrial park.
  
• Help companies to conduct audit of clean manufacturing and establish environment management system.
  
• Organize companies to participate in business network conference and identify cooperation opportunities.
  
• Provide all kinds of training and information, like cases description, technological guidance, etc.
  
• Encourage and support the research activities in the field of ecological industry.
